In the heart of the Cheney Brothers National Historic Landmark District.

Visit

The mansion sits on a quiet hill in the Cheney Brothers National Historic Landmark District — one of the most intact ensembles of nineteenth-century American industrial life still standing.

Over a hundred acres of mills, mansions, worker cottages, and civic buildings are preserved together here, all built or owned by the Cheney family during the silk era. Manchester is fifteen minutes east of downtown Hartford, and within an easy drive of Boston, New York, and the Connecticut shore.

Within Walking Distance.

  • Cheney Homestead — 0.1 mi. The original family house, c. 1785, now a museum.
  • The Fire Museum — 0.2 mi. Housed in the 1901 Cheney Hose Co. No. 2 firehouse.
  • Charter Oak Park — 0.5 mi. Open lawns, walking paths, and the old Cheney trolley right-of-way.
  • Cheney Hall & Little Theatre — 0.6 mi. Built in 1867 as the company’s gathering hall, now a working theatre and concert venue.
  • Manchester History Museum — 0.8 mi. The full story of the town and the family.

Getting Here.

  • From Hartford — 15 minutes east on I-84. Exit 60 or 62 onto Center Street, then a few minutes south.
  • From Bradley International Airport (BDL) — 35 minutes south.
  • From Boston — About 1 hour 45 minutes via the Mass Pike.
  • From New York City — About 2 hours 15 minutes via I-91 north.
  • From the Connecticut shore — 45 minutes to an hour, depending on point of origin.

Parking is on-property — a circular drive at the front of the house plus a small overflow area behind.

The Seasons Here.

Spring. The walled garden comes back slowly — hellebores first, then the early bulbs, then the climbing roses on the south wall. The koi return to the surface of the pond by late April.

Summer. The conservatory doors stay open to the lawn. Most warm-weather weddings are held in this season, usually outdoors at the pond. The grounds look their best in June.

Autumn. The maples and oaks around the property turn deep red and gold from mid-October through the first week of November. This is the quietest and arguably the most beautiful time to visit.

Winter. The fireplaces in the great room, parlor, and dining room run nightly. Winter weddings here are held indoors, by firelight, and have a particular kind of intimacy that the warmer seasons cannot match.
